In the beginning

BlueBerry-Shark-Kid-DadBlueberry Shark was launched because of a rare genetic disorder, a video and a trip to the White House.  It’s an interesting story.  Keegan and Tanya Johnson found out nine years ago that their first born son Dante had Prader-Willi Syndrome.  A rare genetic disorder that causes a never-ending feeling of hunger.  They were told they wouldn’t be able to raise any money for research as it wasn’t a well-known condition.  But they decided to do a fundraising walk and they raised $50,000.  Nine years later, they have 72 walks in 7 countries and have raised $3.5 million dollars to date.  In 2012, they entered a video contest about health and wellness and won.  This led to an invite to the White House.

The grassroots movement that got them to Washington, along with the research into obesity in Prader-Willi Syndrome that could be translated to the general population, led them to partner with Siobhan Kukolic and launch Blueberry Shark.  Aptly named after a delicious, healthy fruit, and the only animal that doesn’t get cancer.  The race to create the healthiest kids in the world is on.  Who’s ready to take the first step?

Together we are an ocean

When we decided to start this journey, we went on a “listening tour.” We wanted to hear from as many people as possible about what was and was not working as far as health and wellness in our youth is concerned. We sent some emails and made some phone calls. And we ended up meeting or talking with people including…

  • Medical Officers of Health
  • City Councillors
  • Executive Directors at the Fraser Mustard Institute for Human Development at University of Toronto
  • Directors at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto
  • members of the Ministry of Education
  • members of the Ministry of Health
  • Directors at the Peel Children and Youth Initiative
  • high school students who are growing their own vegetables for the cafeteria with a zero carbon footprint in Canada’s first vertical aeroponic tower garden
  • farms that are doing school trips for children to learn how to pick and cook fresh vegetables
  • members of the George Brown Food Innovation and Research group
  • Humber College research co-ordinators
  • high school teachers who are offering culinary apprenticeship programs to their students and are getting young people cooking opportunities in the real world
  • principals who are building gold standard health and wellness initiatives into the daily curriculum
  • and many more.

Our goal now is to connect people from these groups with community members like you. Parents, teachers, students, professionals, volunteers, athletes, celebrities or politicians who are passionate about making change in their communities. We want to get everyone working together to exponentially grow programs that are thriving and brainstorm new ways to create the healthiest kids in the world.

Because as Ryunosuke Satoro once said, “Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.”

So join the movement today.

Because as Anne Frank once said, “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before beginning to improve the world.”
